Daryl “Jay” Janek age 63 life-time resident of East Chicago, Roxana, Indiana passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 peacefully at his home. He was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Mary (Butkovich) Janek. Survived by sister Christine Wickhorst and neice Mary Beth Wickhorst, one aunt Rosie Manich and many cousins.
Daryl graduated from St. Mary's and Roosevelt High Schools in East Chicago. He retired from U.S. Gypsum as a supervisor after 20+ years service. He also worked part time for Star Liquors on Chicago Avenue for several years. Daryl was an avid sports fan including White Sox, Blackhawks, Bears, Bulls and Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers manager said anybody who will travel this far to see the Brewers play deserves a seat in the announcer's box with Bob Uecker, where he sat at every game. Festival time was his favorite time of year when he could satisfy his passion for food, at the Pierogi Fest, Indiana State and County Fairs, anywhere there were turkey legs or elephant ears were sold. He played hockey and baseball on neighborhood teams and wanted to be a Blackhawk player. He traded sports memorabilia and his dream was to open a nonprofit recycled sport equipment store for under privileged children and to share the knowledge he had for all things sports.
Visitation will be on Thursday October 19, 2017 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Acevez Funeral Home, 4918 Magoun Avenue, East Chicago, IN.
