Frances J. Kenar age 95 of East Chicago passed away June 21, 2017 at Community Hospital in Munster. Frances Julia Kenar, born October 19, 1921 Frances, red-haired, the youngest daughter and last surviving of 9 children born to Andrew and Katherine Zajac, grew up in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. She attended St. Florian’s grade school and graduated from Bowen High School in 1939. She had a beautiful singing voice and often performed as a soloist in different venues of church and school. Genial, open-hearted, yet frank and outspoken, quick to scout duplicity, self-pity, or self-excuse. She had a fearless temperament, a temperament to match her hair. She loved to get out and about, to meet people, her cat and her garden, which she attended well into her old age. Frances follows in death her husband of over 50 years, Edmund F. Kenar, “Red,” whom she married almost immediately upon his return from service in the Second World War. She is survived by their 3 children: Beatrice Van Liew, Edmund P. Kenar, and Paula Kenar-Patterson, and by her granddaughter: Johanna Van Liew. She will be sorely missed. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11:30 am from St. Stanislaus Church, on the NE corner of 150th St. and Magoun Avenue in East Chicago, with Msgr. John J. Siekierski officiating. A viewing will be held 1 hour prior to Mass at 10:30 am at the Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, Illinois
