Joseph Cruz Gutierrez, known fondly as "Cruzie," passed away on March 15, 2025, in Katy, Texas. Born on October 12, 1943, in East Chicago, Indiana, he lived a life that was rich in love, family, and service.
Joseph retired from Inland Steel and subsequently dedicated his time to working as a Special Needs Aid for the School City of East Chicago. In addition to his professional contributions, he was a cherished member of the Hermanos Borrachales Social Club, where he formed lasting friendships and enjoyed his social life in East Chicago.
Education was important to Joseph, and he was proud to be a graduate of East Chicago Washington High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Marines, embodying the qualities of loyalty and dedication that he carried throughout his life.
Family was at the heart of Joseph's existence. He created beautiful memories, especially during the holidays when he loved to gather with his loved ones and share his famous menudo, the best in town. He was fulfilled by engaging in social interactions, particularly his passion for bingo. Joseph had a special bond with his grandchildren, sharing his love for card games, particularly rummy, teaching them not just the rules but how to savor the joy of winning.
Joseph is survived by his children, George Gutierrez, Christine Gutierrez, Cynthia Salinas and her husband Jose Salinas, Cruz Gutierrez, and his brother Thomas Gutierrez; his sister, Lupi/Michael Rodriguez; along with grandchildren Linda/Adonis Munoz, Arianna/Arthur Hernandez, and Christian Salinas. He is also remembered fondly by his 4 great grandchildren Lucia Sky, Aidrean Jude, Avery Cruz, & Leo Anthony and many nieces and nephews who held him dear to their hearts.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda P. Gutierrez; his parents, Jose R. and Ruth Gutierrez; and his brother, Alfonso Gutierrez.
Joseph leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and the ability to bring people together. He is dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Visitation services will be held at Acevez Funeral Home in Hammond, Indiana, on March 25, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM, followed by another visitation at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Hammond on March 26, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A mass will take place at the same location at 11:00 AM, leading to a burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary, Indiana, at 12:30 PM.
Joseph Cruz Gutierrez will be remembered not just for his accomplishments, but for the warmth and love he shared with others, the laughter he brought to gatherings, and the strong bonds he forged with family and friends throughout his life.
