Manuel “Melo” Sanchez 87, of Hammond, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. Melo was born in El Paso, Texas in the little town of Smeltertown on December 11, 1932 to Ascencion and Lucia Sanchez.
In 1946 he moved with his Grandmother Crucita to live with her in Indiana Harbor and seven years later he was drafted by the US Army and served in the Korean War. A Proud Lifetime Member of the Post 508 and a Proud 20 year member of the VFW Post 7237.
Upon returning, he started working at Inland Steel and then switched to Youngstown Steel & Tube (LTV Steel) working in the Tin Mill as a Chrome Line Operator. From which he retired in 1992, after 38 years of service. Manuel married his first love and wife, Eva Galvan and took up residence in Brunswick, in Gary, Indiana.
The Lord granted them three children: Carlos, Martin & Christine. After 33 years of marriage his wife, Eva passed away in January 1988. Some years later he met and married his new found love Sonia, who became a loving helpmate. Melo loved to travel, fish with family and give them pointers, play cards, and dance with his wife. Melo loved to listen to his music and have a cool drink. He also loved watching his Chicago White Sox and Las Vegas Raiders.
Manuel also bowled at the Brunswick Tri City Bowl in the Latin American League. He leaves many fond memories with his family. Manuel is survived by his dear Helpmate and wife , Sonia of 29 years. Fondly remembered by his children, Son Carlos (Diane) Sanchez, Son Martin Sanchez, Daughter Christine (Simon) Abeyta.
Lovingly remembered by all his grandchildren,Granddaughter Marie (Jesse), Grandson Carlitos, Grandson Matthew, Grandson Simon & Granddaughter Raquel. Great Grandchildren Angelo, Giovanni & Donovan. Proud to know he was soon to be a Great Great Grandfather to Amelia Adelise in 2021.
Fondly remembered & survived by his brother Ascencion (Martha) Sanchez and sister Emma Sanchez. Preceded in death by his first wife and love Eva of 32 years. Grandson Vincent. Sister Evangelina (Hermilo) Narvaez, Ofelia (Mario) Garza, Brother Enrique (Natalia) Sanchez, sister Romelia (Hipolito) Perez, sister Juanita “Jenny” Sanchez.
Viewing to be held DIRECLTY at OLPH (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) from 9:00am-10:00am.
Mass will begin at 10:00am.
Preceded with the burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
