Ruben Vela, affectionately known as "Rubbs," graced this world with his vibrant spirit on December 24, 1941, and departed on March 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy woven with camaraderie, laughter, and an indomitable love for the game of baseball and golf. Born in a time when dreams were often forged in the heat of post-war America, Ruben grew to be a man among men—a stalwart figure whose presence enlivened every gathering.
Ruben’s professional journey took shape as a Purchasing Agent for Inland Steel, where he demonstrated unparalleled expertise and dedication. However, it was his heart that truly shone; a heart that found calling not just in business but in the little league fields where he transformed eager youth into champions. He will always be remembered for his passionate crouching outside of the dugout, leading his baseball and softball teams to league championships, instilling in them a sense of pride and perseverance that would serve them well beyond the diamond.
An Indiana Hoosier to the core, Ruben graduated in the esteemed Class of 1968, where he had the honor of playing baseball for his beloved university during the height of his athletic prowess in 1967 and 1968. Furthering his education, he earned a Master’s in Public Administration from Roosevelt College in Chicago, laying the groundwork for a lifelong quest for knowledge and achievement.
Ruben’s vibrant personality made him a social beacon; the kind of man who couldn’t walk down the street without bumping into someone he knew. With storytelling skills that captivated friends and strangers alike, his tales—often seasoned with a dash of humor—resonated deeply with those fortunate enough to partake in his company.
A patriot at heart, Ruben served honorably in the United States Air Force, embodying the spirit of duty and service that he carried throughout life. His interests were as varied as his skills: he delighted in World War II documentaries, relished the camaraderie fostered by bowling nights and poker games, and was known among his peers for possessing a golf swing that could dazzle even the most seasoned players. And how he loved his World Champion Chicago Cubs!
Ruben is survived by his three daughters and son - Laura Maria, Leticia Olga, Monica Linda, and Ruben Vela II. His beloved grandchildren Jordan Javier and Julia Rae Vela, Lilianna Renee, Xavier Ryne, Maia Rose Blower, and Ava Sofia and Amélie Vivianna Adam. Finally, brothers Oscar Vela and Rene Vela and sister Alice Velasco will cherish the memories of his laughter and passion. He joins in eternal rest with his parents, Fernando and Maria Vela, and his siblings, Javier, Fernando, and Edgar Vela, as well as his sister Nelda Luna, who now embrace him beyond the bounds of this earthly life.
Though he has departed, Ruben Vela's essence—the warmth of his smile, the stories he spun, and his legacy as a champion of the field—will continue to echo in the hearts of many, reminding us to embrace life with joy, valor, and a spirit of camaraderie.
A "Celebration of Life" is planned, and details will be forthcoming. Feel free to contact Ruben Vela II at rubensleeps@icloud.com or 773-414-1598 for any questions. We would love for all his friends and family to attend.
